Arnold Schwarzenegger Mulling Return To Movies With 'With Wings Of Eagles, ' World War II Drama

Arnold Schwarzenegger Mask Governator Having concluded his term as governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering a return to motion pictures. However, since Schwarzenegger is 63, we have likely seen the last of Arnold as an action hero.

Still, one of the three scripts Schwarzenegger is looking at, "With Wings as Eagles, " would place him in a meaty role indeed that could see him rise to the status of serious, dramatic actor.

"The script by Randall Wallace ('Braveheart, ' 'We Were Soldiers, ' 'The Man In The Iron Mask') has been knocking around for a decade or so, with Wallace himself keen for Arnold to take on the central role of Ostermann, a German soldier in WWII going against orders to rescue prisoners of war. He says the former Governator would still be right for the role 'well into his sixties.'

"'Extreme fighting and shooting isn't possible for me anymore, ' says Arnold. 'In the future I'll need to pick my roles according to my age. Clint Eastwood did it the same way. 'In 'With Wings As Eagles' I would play an older soldier, but the script still has all kinds of adventure.'"

The model of Clint Eastwood is certainly an interesting one. Eastwood, who is as famous as a director as well as an actor, has done some of his best work past the age of 60. Films he has appeared in as an older actor include "Unforgiven, " "Space Cowboys, " "Million Dollar Baby" and "Gran Turino." Schwarzenegger, who came a long way in his pre-governator days as an actor, could attempt such serious roles.

The one of a German soldier, a prisoner of war camp commandant, with an actual moral dilemma could stretch Schwarzenegger, whose previous roles involved killing aliens, robots, and other various bad guys. It would be fascinating how Arnold would approach the role.

Other period roles, such as a Medieval king or Viking leader, would also be possible. One could see Schwarzenegger do an older Charlemagne, Harald Hardrada, or any number of Germanic barbarian enemies of the Roman Empire.

There is no word about what the other two scripts are. One possibility is that one of them might be the often discussed "King Conan, " a sequel of sorts to Schwarzenegger's signature role, the twist being that Conan is much older, having made himself a king "by his own hand" and now wondering if it was all worth it.

A sequel to "True Lies" would certainly also be interesting, with perhaps Harry Trasker as the head of Omega Section directing someone younger (Dwayne Johnson?) to do all of the running and jumping stuff that a super spy needs to do. Indeed, Eliza Dushku's Dana Trasker would be old enough to be a field agent.

Of course Schwarzenegger is certainly capable of doing comedy. "Kindergarten Cop, " "Twins" and "Jingle all the Way" certainly proved that.

Thus we await Schwarzenegger's return to the big screen with interest. His role of governor of California may not have been his most successful one (the aliens and mutants seem to have won in that picture), but Arnold has a lot of life and hopefully a lot of movies still left in him.
